Jesus is well known for His kindness to broken, lost people who are mired in sin. He came to set captives free and seek and save the lost. He loved those who followed Him, as we saw when He broke down and cried when Lazarus was still in the tomb. He is love incarnate.
And He was brutal with lukewarm followers.
John 6 begins with a large crowd following Him because of the healing and miracles He had performed. Then in verses 53-58 of John 6, Jesus stirs up a hornet’s nest when He says:
Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me.
With the result that:
After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”
John 6:66-67
Not only does He let those who followed Him before go without chasing after them, He doubles down and asks the 12 apostles if they want to go to! This isn’t how we build churches in the States.
The Lord shows us how He feels about lukewarm believers in Revelations 3:15-16..
“‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.”
…They disgust Him.
The idea of Jesus regurgitating church-goers should cause fear and trembling because many American Christians are lukewarm, thus the Titanic-sized mess we’re in. Our comfort-driven, seeker-friendly churches who avoid topics that aren’t “positive and encouraging” have created the soil that lukewarm Christians rot in. You can’t equip God’s people to be overcomers and prayer warriors in a sex-saturated culture if you won’t touch the topics like pornography, masturbation, promiscuity, adultery, abortion, and sexting that Christians are struggling with, let alone going to the depth necessary to show them how to break free and heal from these issues. No lukewarm church can act as the salt that preserves its nation or stands up to evil. We are Laodicea and we’re losing our country.
If we’re serious about a spiritual awakening, we have to come to terms with the fact that we as a church have propagated and fed the movement of “positive and encouraging.” We’ve created the lukewarm mess that we’re in.
So let’s go Rogue and break this stronghold by cooperating with the work God has already begun to thin out the lukewarm and call them to repentance.
