The Lord is merciful and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
He will not always chide,
nor will he keep his anger forever.
He does not deal with us according to our sins,
nor repay us according to our iniquities.
For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him;
as far as the east is from the west,
so far does he remove our transgressions from us.
As a father shows compassion to his children,
so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him.
For he knows our frame;
he remembers that we are dust.
Psalms 103:8-14
It’s difficult to pray to God if you see Him as furious at you for your sin. Seeking His face will be terrifying if you’re expecting a beating.
The Christian life can also be a self-seeking, lukewarm disaster if we focus only on God’s love and leave out His holiness, hatred toward sin, and expectation for righteousness and justice.
In the same way we prayed through Psalm 51 on Day 8, take the time to slowly pray through Psalm 103 today. Look for God’s character and His heart—for you—in this chapter. Turn it into a time where you enjoy His presence and get to know Him, worship Him, and allow Him to speak to you.
